School Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services support a healthy school through programs and services that value the social and emotional well-being of students, families and staff.  Services are provided to improve students’ mental, emotional, and social health through individual and group assessments, interventions, and referrals.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The School Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services component promotes: 

o    Acceptance of self

o    The ability to express thoughts and feelings in a responsible manner

o    Understanding and respect for differences in others

o    Positive interpersonal relationships

o    The ability to give and receive support

o    Awareness of stresses which interfere with healthy development

o    Willingness to request assistance when needed

o    A supportive school environment that links to community resources.

GOAL: Maintain a culture in my school that is conducive to making students, families, and staff members feel safe, secure, accepted, and valued.

GOAL: Maintain a culture in my school that ensures student access to primary prevention, intervention, and treatment of mental health and substance abuse problems.

Actions for Schools

 

Revise the school’s mission statement to include a comprehensive focus on addressing barriers to earning and enhancing healthy development

 

Ensure the assignment of a site leader and the creation of a steering group to plan and oversee the policy commitments and systemic changes needed to address those barriers

 

Map and analyze resources in the school and community

 

Increase the amount of staff development devoted to strategies for addressing barriers to learning and enhancing healthy development

 

Actions for School Complexes and Districts

 

Ensure that:

 

Mission statements at all levels reflect commitment to addressing barriers to learning and enhancing healthy development

 

The organizational structure includes the necessary leadership to plan and implement systemic changes

 

Coordinating bodies exist that bring together people and resources from several schools

 

Appropriate staff development and other capacity-building efforts are provided

 

Actions for State and National Organizations and Colleges and Universities

 

Establish a broad unifying concept that can help increase policy support and guide research and practice related to addressing barriers to student learning and enhancing healthy development, including an increased emphasis on prevention

 

Develop interagency collaborative agreements

 

Establish incentives for systemic changes to develop comprehensive, integrated approaches

 

Provide opportunities to learn more about concepts and strategies for addressing barriers to learning and enhancing healthy development

 

Adopt cross-disciplinary perspectives and integrated practices
